The Meeting
We met as next-door neighbours, the old-fashioned way. Our ceremony started as a celebration of the serendipity that brought us together because we weren’t supposed to meet. James from Melbourne, I’m from Brisbane, yet the universe placed us side by side in Sydney, living next door to each other in November 2018. In true neighbourly fashion, James strolled over to my share house more and more often. Living in townhouses with identical layouts, we spent a lot of time sneaking between each other's places and slowly becoming inseparable.
The Proposal
James surprised me with a dream vacation to Hamilton Island in December 2023. The first day was faultless, pristine beaches, sea and sun. The next day, Cyclone Jasper hit. James' planned proposal, a helicopter ride to Whitehaven beach, was suspended until further notice. Every morning, James would tell me he was “just checking if the jet skis are going out today” and would go to the front desk for updates on his proposal plan but the weather cancelled all outdoor activities.
We embraced the cosy confinement and enjoyed the most of our Qualia private villa indoors, great food at the hotel’s restaurant and a painting class. On day three, during a brief weather break, we did a scenic buggy tour of the island. When we returned to our villa, I walked in to find two staff members behaving oddly in our room. I was confused, questioning if they were housekeeping but when I saw them carrying long-lens cameras, I turned around to find James on one knee. He had arranged an intimate proposal with our favourite champagne and caviar by the pool. The rest of the trip played out like a dream, the cyclone finally easing, the skies opened up, and we took to the air on that long-awaited helicopter ride to Whitehaven Beach, a private paradise, a perfect ending to an imperfectly perfect proposal.
Wedding Day Vision
Our ceremony vision centred around a "Wildflower Meadow" theme that celebrated natural, untamed beauty. We embraced lavish greenery paired with soft pastel tones and striking proteas to create an atmosphere of intimate elegance that felt effortlessly organic and timeless.
We chose restraint over extravagance for the reception in the Yallamundi Rooms at the Sydney Opera House to allow the iconic harbour backdrop to take center stage. For the evening festivities, we took inspiration from the classic movie My Best Friend’s Wedding. The bridesmaids wore lavender like Julia Roberts. My (Jen’s) best friend Glenn was MC to our special today. Glenn led an acapella version of the Say A Little Prayer song, as guests joined in the chorus to welcome the bridal party entrance. We wanted an atmosphere where guests could relax and fully appreciate the breathtaking surroundings, the harbour, the architecture of the Opera House, and the natural beauty of sydney’s waterfront.
Where did you look for wedding dress inspiration?
I'd been quietly curating my dream dress vision for a few years, collecting inspiration from Galia Lahav, Elie Saab and Oscar de la Renta collections. Each saved image helped me zone in on what I liked, I was drawn to gowns that whispered rather than shouted, where intricate floral details lived in harmony with the fabric rather than competing for attention and my dress is the perfect example of this.
The Wedding Dress: Galia Lahav Holly from Helen Rodrigues Bridal
My experience at Helen Rodrigues Bridal may genuinely be my favourite part of the entire bridal journey. From the moment I walked in, I was welcomed, listened to, and felt like I was in expert hands. In shorter terms, completely at ease (and this is a sacred feeling for any bride in the midst of the planning process).
The Holly gown was the first dress I put on, and I knew straight away. It is a design that celebrates the feminine silhouette, with a neckline that is both romantic and empowering. I was chasing that elusive sweet spot of youthful sophistication, something that would feel fresh and contemporary while honouring the bridal tradition.
Helen and the team are so meticulous with detail and alterations to really make the dress look and feel like yours. I have a fair complexion with red hair, so I was worried about finding the right colour/tone, but their advice on my colouring was spot-on. They customised a soft blush undertone that suited me perfectly. When my dress arrived, the communication was exactly, prompt updates, and closely worked with me on the alteration process. The ladies are genuinely lovely people who care about making your special day perfect.

Wedding Day Highlight
Two moments stand out. First, exchanging the vows we'd been crafting together for over a year, capturing inspiration as it struck us in the moment, weaving our story into words that felt authentically ours. We made a pact early on: no AI or outside help, speaking our truth in our own words. The intimacy of that moment was everything.
The second highlight was watching our guests discover our bonbonnière, a recipe book we had been making for the past year since our engagement, filled with the most cherished dishes from both sides of our families. Seeing people flip through pages of my dad's legendary pumpkin scones and my signature tuna tartare, knowing they'd take home pieces of our heritage to recreate in their own kitchens, felt like the most meaningful gift we could share.
Advice for future #HRBride’s
For my fellow brides searching for their perfect gown: don't settle for a dress you simply love the look of. Keep searching until you find the one that makes you feel like the most radiant, elevated version of yourself. Chase that feeling.
As for wedding planning in general, my biggest piece of advice is to advocate fiercely for your vision. Before diving into decisions, sit down with your partner and clearly define your essentials versus nice-to-haves. This will become your North Star, so you can confidently allocate your time, energy, and budget toward what truly matters while letting go of everything else. Trust me, this clarity will save your sanity. Lastly and oh so subtly, listen to Mel Robbins' "Let Them Theory" podcast, it's a game-changer for setting boundaries and staying true to yourself.
